Competing from beyond the grave?

Posted by Stevio in Business, My Network on May 31st, 2007

Soon after buying PoetryMag.com last year came a lot of hassle due to the seller trying to sell a copy on DigitalPoint. The seller’s behaviour was very unprofessional and in some cases juvenile.

Ever since my encounter with this person I had taken a passing interest in his dealings, as I was curious to see if there was anything dubious going on - and there were a few times.

This week I found out he had died, and yet still there appears to be controversy.

Apparently he sold a website database business for $10k to a Canadian, signing a no-compete agreement at the same time. Now his wife is starting up a very similar business, with her late husband’s ‘business partner’.

I don’t know why, but I’m suspicious, especially with the way the use of her husband’s death is being used to get out of an agreement.

Also, interestingly, his wife is mentioned along with her husband at RipOffReport.com. The last being from March this year.

I don’t know for sure if anything untoward is going on, but it will be interesting to see what action the Canadian takes, if any. As she’s a widow with three kids now, it wouldn’t look good in court, would it?

Don’t get me wrong, if he is dead I’m sorry to hear that. But having first hand experience of someone like him, I won’t be shedding any tears.

Two monitors are better than one!

Posted by Stevio in My Network on May 28th, 2007

On Friday I got another 19″ wide screen monitor. Installation was very easy as it was just a matter of plugging in the VGA and power leads.

So far it hasn’t quite helped productivity, but it’s certainly cuts out the hassle of switching between browser windows when working on various sites. I think it’ll be of most benefit when working on building websites when using software like Photoshop.

I must say having two monitors feels quite natural. It’s not overwhelming at all, as you might have thought.

I’ve managed to get my eight year old Hauppauge WinTV card working too - so having a TV screen in the corner of one of the screens is quite fun!

Dual monitors

Posted by Stevio in My Network on May 25th, 2007

Dual monitorsA week or so ago I decided that I was going to go down the dual monitors route. Reason why is because after reading quite a lot of people saying how much it increases productivity, I thought it’d be worth trying.

I ordered a Connect 3D Radeon 9550 256mb graphics card from Amazon for £37.82 and it turned up this week. Installation of the card was simple, as I only had to remove the old card and replace it with this one. The problem came when I got no signal through DVI. Turns out it was because the plug wouldn’t go in correctly due to the monitors bad design. I wouldn’t mind but surely HP knew of this, since they supplied the DVI cable with the monitor!

When I got everything up and running, I had my main HP widescreen 19″ LCD monitor with an old HP 17″ monitor set up. It was quite odd being able to move the mouse cursor from one monitor to the other, especially when the monitors were the wrong way round! The quality of display of the LCD compared to the old monitor was so much better. So now I plan to get a new widescreen 19″ LCD monitor.

I know that having two monitors won’t necessarily improve my productivity, but I certainly think it’ll make things a lot easier. For example, for keeping track of the Baseball, I won’t have to keep switching browser windows.

I’ll post more about this once I get the new monitor and have it all up and running. It’ll be interesting to how much of a change it will be - positive or negative.

Two websites sold, two still for sale

Posted by Stevio in My Network on May 24th, 2007

Unfortunately the sale of my Wayne Rooney site fell though, as once again the buyer didn’t pay up. I went ahead and put it back on the market and it was sold after a 12 hour auction.

I also put 007Fan.com, SupercarPrices.com and BestTuner.com up for sale on various forums. So far only the latter has been sold. The two others had a lot of interest initially, but no bids. Currently there’s less than a day remaining on their auctions - fingers crossed they’ll sell.

I must say I’m not a fan of selling sites, as in a way it is a defeat, but sometimes you come to a point where it’s best to sell and let someone else put new life into a site. Of course, it’s always better if you do it whilst a making profit at the same time.
