Taking stock

Posted by Stevio in My Network on May 20th, 2007

Yesterday I looked at the sites in my network to see which sites aren’t performing too well in terms of traffic and revenue. Unfortunately there’s quite a few.

Some I notice have been suffering due to neglect, so I intend to sell those off. The others I’ve made notes on what can be done to improve both traffic and revenue.

I think on some sites Adsense isn’t performing too well, therefore I’m considering signing up with text-link-ads.com and seeing if revenue can be improved that way. I’ll also consider what other revenue streams could be explored.

I mentioned recently that I was considering selling my Wayne Rooney site. Well I went ahead and set up an auction and found a buyer. Unfortunately the buyer didn’t make payment by the date agreed. I’ve agreed to an extension and if the buyer doesn’t come through this time, then the site will be put up for sale again.

A few weeks back I purchased Facts About Sharks - yes, another animal site. I’m not sure exactly what I’m going to do with it yet, but I’ll think of something.

I also managed to get hold of a site by using a method suggested at takemorerisks.com. I’m not sure I would recommend anyone using the method despite the fact I was successful. Most of the site owners I tried contacting didn’t reply, and the quality of sites available weren’t that great. The one I got hold of didn’t have a domain name for example, so I’ve since registered a .com domain. So even though the site was free, I’ve still had to pay for a domain. I’m not grumbling though, I just hope I can do a good job for the previous owner.

Webmaster Radio FM

Posted by Stevio in Business on May 17th, 2007

If you’ve seen ‘Ruddy Hell! It’s Harry And Paul’ on the BBC, you’ll pretty much have an idea of how Webmaster Radio FM can sound. That said, despite some of the geek sounding hosts and guests, some of the shows do provide good advice for webmasters.

An example would be a few days ago someone was giving tips on getting sites approved at DMOZ - basically looking at the descriptions at the category where you wanted to submit and using the same style as a guideline of what to write.

I recommend everyone to tune in every now and again. You can visit the site and listen in without clicking or installing anything - best of all, it’s free!

Good old football transfers

Posted by Stevio in My Network on May 16th, 2007

As the regular football season has finished, player movement has increased, meaning I’ve been busy updating footballtransfers.co.uk. I must say even though there’s lots to do, it is quite enjoyable working on the site, especially since there’s been little activity since January’s transfer window closed.

The site still needs a massive redesign and a lot of updating. I was hoping to get it done during the last few months, but with putting it up for sale and the coding delays, it just never got done.

I’m quite positive over the site now and fingers crossed I won’t be put into a position where I have to put it up for sale again. I’ve been running the site for nearly nine years and would hope to continue to do so for some time yet. Sadly I don’t think I’ll be getting a testimonial match out of it though!

Godaddy’s ridiculous .info renewal price

Posted by Stevio in My Network on May 13th, 2007

I was pretty annoyed during the week when I had to pay $10.21 to renew a .info at Godaddy. $10.21 is a ridiculous amount to pay for a renewel. I was so annoyed that I contacted Godaddy to see if there was a coupon that I had missed, sadly no.

Interestingly Godaddy did have the following to say.

Thank you for contacting Online Support.

Currently we do not have any special pricing on .info renewals. If you would like, you may call our 24/7 support center as they often have “call-in” specials only available over the phone. You can reach them at any time at 480-505-8877.

Please let us know if we can help in any other way.

Of course, as I’m in the UK, no way was I calling.
