Looking to buy

Posted by Stevio in Business on July 14th, 2007

I’ve noticed that it has become even more difficult to find quality sites to buy. I’m always on the lookout, but still it’s the same old rubbish at the likes of Digital Point, Site Point and various other webmaster forums.

Yes, there’s still the same old uninteresting sites for sale, like proxies and image hosting sites. Surely people will stop buying these some day soon!?

Lately, the trend is to sell made for Adsense sites on mental and physical illnesses. These sites contain unique content, but they lack quality and are incredibly tacky. One example is a site giving advice on depression. It contains a photo of a woman looking sad with her bottom lip stuck out. It just shows what sellers mindsets are when they’re creating a site, it’s not actually to help people, it’s simply about making money out of a sensitive subject.

I think if you’re looking to buy a site you’re best off searching for a site that fits your requirements in most departments. Of course, it’s not much fun acquiring something that needs no work, as that’ll mean you’ll have to pay a hefty price. It also helps if the site has been neglected for a while, as the owner may be more willing to sell.

Football forum sales

Posted by Stevio in Business on June 13th, 2007

I recently found out that a football forum I sold for £xxx sold for £2000. You might be thinking I should be kicking myself, but to be honest, the person I sold the forum to made many improvements, like moving it from PHPBB to vBulletin, installing many mods, including a shop.

The reason why I sold it was because I wanted someone to take it to the next level - and he did exactly that.

Sadly the person turned out not to be a football fan and never posted, which thus ended my association with the forum.

He left a few moderators that kept the sinking ship afloat, but sadly the forum never met the potential it should have.

Whether his motivation for buying the forum in the first place was purely financial, I don’t know. But buying a forum on a subject where they have no knowledge and leaving others to run it is crazy.

Funny thing was the guy is an SEO expert and at the time of buying the forum was bragging about how he was going to do this and that in search engines to get traffic. Well currently my new football forum is on the front page of Google for that search term, where his is on the second page…

It seems there’s a market for football forums, on SitePoint recently doubleyellowcard.com sold for $4k. Another, much smaller forum, 442footballforums.co.uk, sold for $600.

Burst Media reduce payment terms

Posted by Stevio in Business on June 8th, 2007

Good news today from Burst Media regarding payments.

We are happy to announce that beginning with campaigns that start July 1st, Burst is reducing its publisher payment terms to 45 days from 90 days. This has been a key issue for our publishers and we are happy to affirm our commitment to you with this change.

Admittedly, I would prefer payment after 28 days, but this is a step in the right direction for Burst Media, as 90 days was far too long to wait for payment.

Talking of advertising, I signed up for Text-Link-Ads.com last week. Sadly the site I wanted to use their ads on didn’t use PHP 5, so it was a no-go. Perhaps I’ll consider using their service on another site, as I’m curious to check them out.

Attack of the Clones

Posted by Stevio in Business, My Network on June 1st, 2007

Since my post yesterday about the no-compete agreement, the wife has come out fighting saying she will continue with her ‘clone’ website, claiming there’s nothing legally to stop her. That said she says she will hold talks with the buyer.

I think she’s pretty clued up on what she’s doing, in fact, I suspect she was all along the brains behind the business.

Interestingly, in the same forum thread she mentions another thread where her husband was touting a ‘Get rich quick’ scheme. At the time, I was very active in the thread warning people about him, as it was happening at the same time as I was trying to stop him selling a copy of PoetryMag.com.

I’m not sure why she brought it up, as it wasn’t in context with the thread, but funnily enough, two people miraculously came out of the woodwork and claimed that they and their families benefited from the ’scheme’. However, it’s strange, as I contacted another of the ‘chosen few’ who said it was a ’scam’.

I have to admit that I’ve been tempted to post on her thread, as she mentions when people were calling him a liar - which I did once or twice. But I know full well that I have to bite my tongue, as if do say anything, I’ll only get stick from those few eulogising about him.

It’s odd how people try to make saints out of people after they’ve died, sadly this guy was no saint.
