Should we trust online reviews?

Last week I decided to get a new television after hearing about one being on sale at Argos. Like most buyers, I read the reviews written by customers on Argos’ website. There were hardly any negativity over the item, only some complaints over the sound being tinny. So I went ahead and purchased the 22″ Bush television.

After receiving it, I was pretty impressed, it was an impressive design and good picture quality. Only negative thing was that the sound was pretty tinny. With a few tweaks in the settings it didn’t sound too bad, but after a while I noticed that the aspect ratio of the picture was quite off, as people appeared a little too long and thin. Even with tweaking the settings, I couldn’t do anything to improve it.

After a few days, the television was taken back and replaced. But the odd thing is that the Bush television had 62 comments, not one mentioned the symptoms I experienced. Could it have been a fault? Possibly, but I doubt it. It got me thinking though, should we trust reviews from the likes of Argos and Amazon? How truthful are they? As I’m beginning to have my doubts.

Twitter

Posted by Stevio in Miscellaneous on February 20th, 2009

I’ve been using Twitter since September and so far I’m still a little baffled by it.

My account is mainly regarding the latest goings on at Tottenham Hotspur, which hasn’t been good this season.

I mainly post bits of Spurs news or opinions, or even sometimes something in general, that part of Twitter is good, but I’ve found when it comes to the posts of others, well, it’s a bit on the dull side and usually not something I’m interested in. Of course, this is down to my lack of following people.

So who do I follow? Being English I don’t really have any interest in what Barack Obama is doing. Most of the celebs are pretty dull too.

I’m aware of how Twitter can be used as an alternative to RSS, but I prefer RSS feeds over Twiiter, so it isn’t too much use for me as a news source.

I guess it could become useful if I have something to promote, but spamming really isn’t my thing.
